If your phone has suffered phone water damage, turn it off as soon as possible. Do not keep checking whether it still works. If the phone is powered on, hold the power button and switch it off.
Water and electricity can cause short circuits and damage sensitive components inside the device. Turning the phone off quickly can reduce the risk of further electrical damage.
Do not connect a wet phone to a charger. If there is moisture inside the charging port or device, applying power can increase the risk of a short circuit and further damage.
Wait until the phone has been properly inspected and dried before attempting to charge it again.
Remove the phone case, SIM card and memory card if your device has one. Gently dry the outside of the phone with a soft, clean cloth and keep the charging port facing down so excess water can drain out.
Do not insert paper, cotton swabs or other objects into the charging port, as this can push moisture or debris further inside.
Putting a wet phone in rice is a common piece of advice, but it is not a reliable way to remove moisture from inside the device. Rice can also leave dust or small particles in the charging port and other openings.
Instead, keep the phone switched off and allow it to dry in a clean, dry environment. Avoid using a hair dryer, heater or other strong source of heat, as excessive heat can damage the phone and battery.
With phone water damage, time can matter. Moisture left inside a phone can eventually contribute to corrosion, particularly around connectors and other sensitive components.
If the phone was exposed to a significant amount of water, having it inspected as soon as possible can help identify moisture and corrosion before they cause additional problems.
The answer depends on how much water entered the phone, how long it remained inside and which components were affected. Some phones recover after proper inspection and cleaning, while severe liquid damage can affect the charging system, display, battery or main board.
