7 Habits That Are Killing Your Phone Battery
Small everyday habits wear a battery down far faster than age does. Our technicians explain what actually matters, what is a myth, and when…
Read ArticleNine times out of ten it is not the battery. Check the cable, the port and the settings in this order.
Phone charges slowly? Start by checking the cable and charger before assuming there is a problem with the phone itself. Cables can wear out or become damaged over time, and not every charger supports the charging speed your phone is designed to use.
Try a different, certified cable and a charger that supports your phone’s fast-charging standard. If the phone starts charging normally, the original cable or adapter is likely the problem.
Charging cables can fail long before the phone itself develops a problem. Look for visible damage, bent connectors or loose connections. If possible, test your phone with another reliable cable and compatible charger.
Keep in mind that charging speed also depends on the phone, charger and cable working together. A basic charger may charge the phone safely but much more slowly than a compatible fast charger.
Dust and pocket lint can build up inside the charging port and prevent the connector from seating properly. Even a small amount of debris can cause a poor connection and make your phone charge slowly or stop charging intermittently.
Check the port carefully and avoid using metal objects or anything that could damage the contacts inside. If the port is damaged or heavily blocked, professional cleaning may be safer.
A phone can appear to charge slowly when it is using almost as much power as it receives. Large downloads, system updates, GPS navigation, gaming and other demanding apps can increase power consumption while the phone is connected to a charger.
Try charging the phone with demanding apps closed and the screen turned off. If charging becomes noticeably faster, background activity may have been contributing to the problem.
If your phone still charges slowly after testing the charger, cable and charging port, the battery may be worn. A battery that has lost significant capacity may also show other symptoms, such as shorter battery life, unexpected shutdowns or excessive heat.
On many phones, battery health below around 80 percent can be a sign that replacement should be considered. The exact threshold depends on the device and the condition of its battery.
If your phone charges slowly even with a known-good cable and compatible charger, the problem may be related to the charging port, battery or internal charging circuit. Physical damage, corrosion or a faulty charging component can all affect charging performance.
If the phone was recently exposed to water or the charging port has been physically damaged, avoid forcing the cable into the port. Continuing to use a damaged charging connection can make the problem worse.
If you have tried a different cable and charger and cleaned the charging port carefully, but your phone still charges slowly, there may be an underlying hardware problem.
